The drama during the president’s election was ugly and embarrassing – Christian Council

The Christian Council has condemned the chaotic dispute between Members of Parliament (MP) over the election of a president, describing the behavior as “disgusting and shameful”.

Members of Parliament on Wednesday January 6, 2021 began an exercise to elect a Speaker of the House.

The speaker’s position was strongly contested by NPP Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye and NDC’s Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

However, the exercise that saw Mr. Bagbin emerge victorious with 138 votes out of 275, was characterized by atrocious acts that included the theft of ballots and a ballot box by deputies.

The President of the Christian Council, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, says the misconduct did not create a good image for Ghana, a country widely known around the world as a model of democracy.

He said that parliamentarians should behave well and offer a sincere apology to the public and ensure that such misconduct is not repeated.

The Most Reverend Dr. Boafo, who is also the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, said the church also condemns the act and finds it disappointing.

“This is something new that we are all experiencing. The best way is to reach a consensus between the parties to prevent the nation from backsliding.

“Ghanaians voted for peace, development and unity, therefore if they represent us, they must think of Ghana first and make it a priority in every decision they make in Parliament.”
