On Thursday October 15, 2020, some Anlo residents attempted to serve the Awoamefia of Anlo, Togbe Sri III, with an eight-day interlocutory injunction from the Ho High Court to prohibit him from contesting the presidency of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs .
The court issued the court order on October 9, 2020.
According to the plaintiffs, Togbe Sri III “managed to become the Awoamefia of the state of Anlo” even though he does not qualify.
They explained that the last Awoamefia, Togbe Adaladza II, died in 1998 and the stool was left empty before Togbe Sri III took office.
“The Awoamefia stool rotates between two clans: the Bate Clan and the Adzovia Royal Clan.
“Togbe Adaladza II was from the Bate Clan, so the next Awoamefia must come from the Adzovia Royal Clan.
“The Adzovia Royal Clan is made up of three different doors, but the first respondent [Togbe Sri III, cited as Amega Patrick Agboba] it does not come from any of the three gates.
“The father of the first defendant is from the Hohoe district and his mother is from the Akatsi district.
“However, the 1st defendant managed to become the Awoamefia of the Anlo state,” the document details.
The document further stated that the representatives of the Adzovia Royal Clan filed a petition against him, but to no avail.
He was also charged with contempt.
“But still, he goes ahead, defiantly, which is the Awoamefia, and even dares to participate in the elections to become the president of the Chamber of Regional Chiefs of Volta,” the document adds.
Togbe Tepre IV of Anfoega emerged as the new president of the House of Regional Chiefs of Volta at the end of the poll.
Out of a total of 52 votes, Togbe Tepre, who was the vice president of the then Soglo Alloh IV (now part of Oti) obtained 34 votes and Togbe Sri obtained 18 votes.
