The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has warned that the COVID-19 situation in the country is alarming and dire at this particular time with the risk of a potential exponential increase in the number of cases.
According to the GMA, this development calls for the concern of all Ghanaians and well-meaning organizations because the increase in coronavirus cases can be attributed to the “utter disregard and lack of application of all relevant COVID-19 preventive protocols throughout the country”. “And the” importation of cases from other countries through travelers arriving at the point (s) of entry.
The GMA, in a statement on January 14, 2021, noted that in recent weeks, just before, during and after the Christmas and New Year holidays, the COVID-19 case count in the country has risen sharply.
“The various important sanitary facilities [especially in the Accra Metropolis] involved in the management of moderate, severe and critically ill COVID-19 patients are overburdened, ”the statement said.
Active COVID-19 cases in Ghana, which remained below 800 before the Christmas holidays, have soared to 1,420 as of January 11.
This development has been of great concern to many experts who believe that there is a second wave of the outbreak that is not receiving as much national attention as the first.
Therefore, the GMA has requested an urgent expansion of the COVID-19 testing and contact tracing regimen for all positive cases, as well as strict isolation and management of all infected individuals to help break the chain of transmission.
“Additionally, COVID-19 testing should be free or relatively cheaper for the common Ghanaian who needs testing as a result of direct exposure or when exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Furthermore, there should be free mass government-led testing at all identified COVID-19 hotspots, ”the statement read.
This, the GMA believes, will help address current firing drops in our testing and contact tracing regimes.
The GMA further requested that healthcare workers be provided with appropriate personal protective equipment to help them perform their duties safely and effectively.
