Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Stephen Sarfo Tenkorang, the Regional Bond Motor Traffic and Transport in Sunyani, that the Region recorded 259 traffic accidents, involving 230 vehicles and 163 motorcycles in 2020.

DSP Tenkorang said 113 people, 91 men and 22 women, lost their lives, while 323 people suffered various degrees of injuries.

He said motor kings weren’t supposed to haul wooden planks, logs, and passengers, but that passengers did so without concern for their safety and that of others.

DSP Tenkorang said that passengers continued to disobey traffic rules and regulations because most of them, in addition to not having licenses, were driving without wearing helmets.

He said the MTTD would continue to educate drivers and passengers to comply with road traffic rules and regulations, adding that defiant drivers and passengers would be arrested and prosecuted for court.

DSP Tenkorang emphasized the need for drivers to perform regular maintenance on their vehicles and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and being overloaded, stating that these were very essential contributing factors to minimizing traffic accidents.

He called on passengers to cooperate with drivers to help in the effort to reduce, if not total, prevention of the growing rate of traffic accidents in the region.

DSP Tenkorang therefore cautioned that while passengers should not speak in any way when expressing their concerns to drivers, the latter should also take the former’s fears and advice in good faith.

He said that “the misunderstandings and the exchange of words between passengers and drivers did not benefit anyone. There must be mutual respect from the point of departure and throughout the journey, as safe arrival at destinations is the ultimate goal in the interest of both parties.

DSP Tenkorang pleaded with passengers to reduce the noise by refraining from fighting with other passengers in the vehicles so that drivers could focus to easily detect any faults at the right time to prevent potential accidents.

He said that passengers should not fight with a driver, especially when the vehicle was in motion, but simply report any unusual activity by the latter to the police at the nearest barrier for action.
