The man who snatched a ballot box in the Sene West constituency in the Bono East region on Election Day was convicted by a court. Christian Nukpeta, 39, will spend three months in jail.
He has also been banned for five years from registering and voting in any election in Ghana.
In addition to the custodial sentence and the prohibition, he is paid a fine of ¢ 3600 GH.
If you fail to pay the fine, you will spend another six months in jail. The sentence was delivered to him when he appeared before the Techiman Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Alexander Graham on Friday, December 11, 2020.
Nukpeta, a Tato Bator resident, pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that he did not know why he became involved in the act. The court was told that it seized a ballot box at one of the area’s polling stations when the counting process was underway.
It took the intervention of security personnel at the scene to pursue and arrest him. Even so, when the box was returned, it had removed one of the stamps, that of the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (PNP).
How the EC will enforce the ban
In a television interview on Joy news On December 12, 2020, the Director of Elections of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe explained how the EC will enforce the ban.
He said the EC has already verified and Christian Nukpeta’s details are on the current record.
You will be “quarantined” in the system and once the CE has your biometric data, every time you try to register, your data will appear.
Dr. Quaicoe said he would have preferred a harsher prison sentence for Nukpeta to serve as a deterrent for others wanting to participate in a similar act in the future.
Sene West seat
The results of the West Senegal Parliament in the East Bono Region are currently pending following a court order.
The EC cannot declare the results until the court has determined the case before it.
Sene West’s prominent seat was contested by three candidates in Monday’s election.
They are incumbent Kwame Ampofo Twumasi of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Kumah Mackay of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Caesar Fomekah of the National Democratic Party (NDP).
