Authorities at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) say reports of alleged robberies on their campuses Monday night were not true.
Major Kofi Baah Bentum (Rtd), the University’s director of public affairs, said his research so far does not confirm what is circulating on social media.
There was chaos on the University of Cape Coast (UCC) campus Monday night as students run around in fear of being attacked by armed robbers.
The students are reported to have fled their lecture rooms where they were studying when a fellow student informed them that there was going to be a robbery on campus.
But authorities said that after further checks, they found the reports were not true.
According to a host of UCC’s ATL FM morning show, a student received a phone call from an unknown person who said a conference room had been robbed, so his was next.
Mary Ama Bawah said that the student who felt he and his colleagues were at risk at the time informed his colleagues of the alleged attack.
According to her, the students set off after being informed.
“However, reports coming in this morning have confirmed that there was no such attack on campus,” he told JoyFM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson.
“We spoke with one of the students who took the video and said that the call came in and he felt he needed to warn his colleagues that he was studying with and they all started running but his conference room was not attacked,” he added.
In addition, he noted that verifications with a blogger who had posted videos of the scene on his site could not confirm that there was an attack.
“We have had the opportunity to speak with the blogger, Fidel Agyeman Osei, who posted the topic on his blog this morning, but said that the students called him because some session of the students have been attacked at gunpoint and by armed robbers. with machetes.
“We have not been able to have any confirmation of any of these students, but at least Fidel let us know that some of these students were injured and have been admitted to the UCC hospital.
“We have gone there, we have also spoken with some of the nurses on duty who told us this morning that no one has entered.
She, the nurses, confirmed that a student arrived with a knee injury, but that happened as a result of the chaos.
“The police were called but they found nothing related to any robbery attack,” he said.
However, there had been an attack on a student earlier. However, she wasn’t sure if that was the cause of the alarm.
“PRO from the UCC Public Affairs Directorate told us that there had been an attack on a student. So it’s quite difficult for us to know if this student was the one who made this call, “he added.
After the incident, social media was rife with comments, with #UCCLivesMatter trending on Twitter.
