The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which comprises all public sector nurses, midwives, medical assistants (PA) and anesthetists (CRA) who went on strike, have reportedly suspended their action.
Nurses and midwives went on strike to demand better conditions of service from the Akufo-Addo government.
After their strike, the National Labor Commission (NLC) obtained a court order to prevent them from putting down their tools and the Fair Wages and Wages Commission (FWSC) also pleaded with them to back off their strike and return to the bargaining table to resolve your complaints.
The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (PNP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, also asked the health workers to rescind their decision saying that the president “has been good to you. We have been able to hire him … Be patient, do not believe that the government that created him jobs and paid his allowances will turn to intimidate him and fire him. It will not honor the government in any way.
Nurses and midwives have finally heeded calls to cancel the strike and resume work with immediate effect.
Speaking with Kwami Sefa Kayi about Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program, the dean of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum, thanked the health workers to get back to work.
He was delighted with his decision because healthcare workers play a vital role in saving lives.
“When UTAG goes on strike and we resume, we can find ways to make up for the void we created … but I am always scared when healthcare workers go on strike because they take care of people’s lives,” he said. .
