John Terry will look to former Chelsea and England teammate Ashley Cole to join his management team if he is given the position at Derby, according to reports.
The Rams are looking for a new head coach after firing Phillip Cocu in November with Terry one of the favorites alongside current interim boss Wayne Rooney.
As reported by Sportsmail, there are people close to Sheik Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, who are close to completing a £ 60 million acquisition of the club, who believe that Terry could revive the Derby fortune.
According to Mirror Sport, Terry is lining up Cole to join him at the championship club.
The former left-back is currently an academy coach at Chelsea and also works as a television pundit, but Terry reportedly thinks he can get the coach into senior football.
The pair won nine trophies during Cole’s eight-year stint at Stamford Bridge.
Terry is part of Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Aston Villa, but he has made no secret of his desire to move to management.
The 39-year-old was endorsed by another of his former teammates and close friend Frank Lampard. The Chelsea manager began his managerial career in Derby and led them to the championship play-off final in the 2018-2019 season.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for him if it’s true, and also for Derby,” Lampard said.
“I have a lot of affection for the Derby from my time there and I know what a great club it is and the great fans it has.
John will be an ambitious and hungry coach, whether in the Derby or another time. He’s going to be a fantastic coach. ‘
The Derby is currently run by former England and Manchester United legend Rooney, who is part of a four-man interim coaching team that has been in charge since Cocu’s firing last month. Rooney stayed on the field for the first two games, but moved to the bench for the games against Wycombe and Coventry, which ended in 1-1 draws.
The Rams have gone 11 games without a win and sit last in the Championship. Rooney is willing to take the job permanently, but is happy to get back to playing if he loses.
The 35-year-old admitted that he has been drawing on Steve McClaren’s experience as he seeks to steer the club out of harm’s way.
Former Derby and England manager McClaren returned to the club as manager last week and Rooney said: ‘He’s had a great Steve because it’s my first time doing this job.
“I’m sure I do, but of course … if I have any doubts about something then it’s great to have Steve there to bounce back and get his experience.”
Rooney will remain in charge temporarily while Sheikh Khaled’s possible inauguration is prolonged.
