The renewal of Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s contract with Barcelona means that he is quickly becoming one of Barcelona’s oldest goalkeepers.
It’s a lineage with a great history behind it, with some of the German’s predecessors responsible for the club’s most memorable moments.
We review some of the most iconic names that have worn the number one Blaugrana jersey.
Antoni Ramallets (1946-1961)
Ramallets was one of the greats of Barcelona and of the game in general.
He played without gloves, slightly moistening his hands so that his hands would better grip the ball.
He played 573 games for the Catalans, won six Spanish league titles and was one of the stars of the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
Salvador Sadurni (1960-1976)
He took over from Ramallets, not an easy task, but ended up becoming part of the club’s furniture.
He played 500 times and won several trophies, including a league title and five Spanish cups.
Sadurni’s 15 seasons in Catalonia make him one of the goalkeepers with the longest service to the club.
Javier Urruticoechea (1981-1988)
‘Urruti’ represented Barcelona with distinction for seven years.
He is probably best remembered for saving the penalty against Real Valladolid on March 24, 1985, which gave the Blaugrana their first league title in five years.
Andoni Zubizarreta (1986-1994)
Zubizarreta was one of the most distinguished goalkeepers to play not only for Barcelona, but also for Spain.
In the eight years he was on the net at Camp Nou, he was part of the ‘Dream Team’ alongside players like Ronald Koeman, Pep Guardiola, Michael Laudrup and Hristo Stoichkov.
He was there when the club won its first European Cup in 1992 at Wembley. Zubizarreta also got four Leagues and two Copas del Rey.
Victor Valdes (2003-2014)
Valdés spent more than a decade in Barcelona’s first eleven, winning six league titles, two King’s Cups, three Champions League and two Club World Cups, among other trophies.
However, one moment stands out: the 2006 Champions League victory over Arsenal.
Ter Stegen (2014-present)
Six years have passed since Ter Stegen arrived at the Camp Nou and he has become a vital piece of the team.
He earns his team points and, at 28, it seems likely that he will have many more years at the club.
Ter Stegen’s character on and off the pitch makes him very loved by the Blaugrana faithful.
