It was a frustrating and painful moment this Monday morning at Tamale Central Hospital, when patients were discharged upon admission, because nurses and other allied health workers began an indefinite national strike.
Some family members were seen lifting their patients from the wards on tricycles to leave the hospital premises, while others waited at the premises wondering where to send their sick relatives.
A boy who came to pick up his father, who was in great pain, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that “I don’t know what to do now. I will take him home.”
The GNA also observed three family members who were trying to resuscitate their sick relative, an elderly man, using a pulmonary resuscitation procedure.
At Tamale University Hospital, patients remained on admission even though the nurses were not on the job.
Nurses, midwives and other allied health workers began a nationwide strike on Monday in accordance with directives from the Ghana Association of Registered Nurses and Midwives to demand better conditions of service.
