SWEET BITTER RETURN FOR BIG SAM

Sam Johnstone returned to Old Trafford for the first time as an ex-Red to try to deny his previous team win and he certainly put in a good effort. Johnstone, now 27, won the FA Youth Cup with the Reds in 2011 alongside Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, but had to accept that he always faced a great fight with David De Gea as our number one.

He was loaned out to seven clubs before finally joining Albion on a permanent contract in July 2018. With a wall of five or six men in front of him when United attacked on Saturday, he was well protected, but when he was raped, Johnstone was available. to show why he was rated so highly as an Academy player at Old Trafford.

After 16 minutes it looked like we would get ahead with a great play between Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes to put Anthony Martial on. The French forward probably shouldn’t have given Johnstone any chance to save, but his cushioned shot still needed quick reactions from the outstretched West Brom goalkeeper.

Then came the penalty shootout drama of a magnificent save only to have to face a Bruno Fernandes penalty again. He was hit on the second try.

However, he kept West Brom in the game until the bitter end, saving incredibly from a point-blank effort by Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.
