Make COVID-19 Testing Free – Ghana Medical Association
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged the government to increase testing to cope with the rising COVID-19 case count in Ghana.
The GMA, in a press release on January 14, 2020, said that testing “should be free or relatively cheaper for the common Ghanaian who needs testing as a result of direct exposure or when exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.”
The GMA also wants the government to implement free mass testing at all identified COVID-19 hotspots that provided healthcare workers with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to help curb COVID-19 infections among staff. health care.
“The GMA believes these will help address current deficiencies in our testing and contact tracing regimes,” the statement said.
Active COVID-19 cases in Ghana, which were less than 800 before Christmas, rose to 1,420 as of January 11, 2021.
Alarming situation of COVID-19
Describing the current COVID-19 situation in the country as “alarming and terrible,” the GMA said there is also a risk of an exponential increase in the number of cases.
The Association mentioned that the main health facilities located in the capital that participated in the management of COVID-19 cases were currently overloaded.
The GMA attributed the increase in cases to the total disregard and lack of compliance with the preventive protocols COVID_19, as well as the importation of cases through travelers from other countries.
“The situation of COVID-19 in the country is alarming and terrible at this particular time. The risk of a possible exponential increase in the number of cases cannot be ruled out.
“The various major healthcare facilities (especially in the metropolis of Accra) involved in managing moderate, severe and critically ill COVID-19 patients are overburdened.”
