RB Leipzig have completed the signing of young Dominic Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian star joins the German team from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in an initial £ 18 million deal.
Salzburg will also have to pay 20 percent of any future transfers, for a player they have nurtured since joining in January 2018, scoring 25 goals in 79 appearances for the club.
Szoboszlai had been monitored by Arsenal before a possible transfer in January.
A large number of the European elite, including AC Milan and Real Madrid, had also been following his process.
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Edu had designated Szoboszlai, last year’s Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season, as a possible midfield as they looked to add more creativity and scoring prowess from the center of the park.
The Gunners had explored ways to finance a January deal, eager to break a £ 23 million release clause with the Austrian side.
However, they ultimately made no move for the 20-year-old midfielder, who has now joined RBL for a lesser figure up front, putting pencil to paper on a long-term deal until 2025, with the Bundesliga. contenders for the title.
He will wear jersey number 17 and will be able to face Liverpool in the Champions League on February 16.
Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of RBL, said: “With the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai we can further strengthen our team.
“With the surplus of transfers of the summer and reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, we generated additional income to be able to carry out a transfer of this magnitude even at this economically difficult time.
“It was important for us to invest this additional income directly into the team. With Dominik Szoboszlai, our team is now even larger and gets additional quality.”
Szoboszlai stated: “I am very happy that the move to RB Leipzig has worked. The club has come a long way, they are one of the best teams in the Bundesliga and they are also causing a sensation in the Champions League.
“The move to Leipzig is perfect for my development, because I come to a first-rate coach and an incredibly ambitious team who are very young, but have already gained a lot of experience and have been able to celebrate some successes.
“I will be able to develop further here and of course I would like to help ensure that the club continues to be so successful in 2021.”
Szoboszlai will be eligible to make his RBL debut on January 9, when he takes on Borussia Dortmund.
