Citi News reports that some 400 Gbefi residents in the Volta region have attacked Kpando Command police officers and allegedly released a suspect arrested by the officers.
According to the report, the incident occurred in the presence of the area’s Chief of Police, DSP Hilarious Avornyo, who is also the Anfoega District Commander of the Ghana Police Service.
An indigenous man from the area residing abroad is said to have informed police on Sunday morning of a murder threat made against his life by the Asafoatse. [Asafoatse Agulo] from Gbefi for land that the complainant allegedly claimed the suspect was using to grow marijuana.
After the complaint, eight agents from the Kpando Command allegedly involved the suspect in a manhunt and subsequently arrested him, but were attacked by some indignant residents of the Kpefi area, numbering about 400.
The attackers are said to have seized a mobile phone that belonged to one of the police officers and also forcibly detained the suspect who was handcuffed.
Anfoega district commander DSP Avornyo admitted to Citi News being present during the attack, but stated that he will only discuss the matter with the media with the authorization of the Regional Command.
