Police Superintendent Imam Hussein Abdul Rahim Hussein, in charge of Islamic Affairs, Ghana Police Service has called on Zongo chiefs to support the police to ensure peace, before, during and after the general elections.
He said that as stakeholders in the community, they should support the police by providing them with the necessary information and by making the people of the community do their best to keep the peace.
Speaking at a forum organized by the National Council of Zongo Chiefs (NCZC) in association with the STAR Ghana Foundation, he noted that while the police would do their best to ensure peaceful elections, chiefs must do everything possible on their part to maintain peace in their communities.
The forum, which aimed to engage chiefs to deliberate on how to guarantee peaceful elections in the various communities of Zongo, had as its theme “Peace, before, during and after the 2020 general elections.”
Supt. Hussein said it was important for the chiefs who were the custodians of the communities to go beyond the talk and make sure that after the discussions, they practiced what they had heard to ensure a peaceful election.
He said that some Zongo communities have been identified as hot spots and as leaders, they had the power to control and speak to the people, as the Almighty had entrusted them with such powers to ensure that there was peace at all times.
He pleaded with them to see themselves as ambassadors for peace and to try to identify all political party groups, connect with and communicate with them to keep the peace.
Chief Imoro Baba Issa, NCZC public relations officer, said Ghanaians, especially young people from different political parties, should put Ghana’s interest before any interest.
He said that “we must help Ghana to obtain its respected image and not destroy it. These elections must not be a matter of life and death, because elections will come and go, but Ghana will remain a country.”
He said elections were normally won at polling stations and therefore parties should strive to send well-informed, knowledgeable and experienced people to polling stations to help minimize tensions that arise in polling stations after elections. .
Imam Issa called on fellow chiefs of the regions to send messages of peace to his people and to be at the forefront to defuse tensions should they arise.
Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, executive director of the Star Ghana Foundation, said that the elections were very important to allow citizens to exercise their civic rights and determine who makes decisions in the country and also to determine the kind of progress we want.
He said that “the bosses are the custodians and those who hold the communities together, for what are their responsibilities and rights, and their religious obligations, to say that if you are going to fight, there are higher values and ideals for which you should fight in Whose place is president. You can fight for your principles, ideas, but in terms of bloodshed, every Muslim should think twice before doing it. “
Tanko said that Star Ghana was counting on the bosses to make a difference in 2020 and make this a starting point.
“It is time that we say no. We are no longer going to be used, but we want to speak out about the problems that generate the development of our communities. We need jobs, health facilities and development. Let’s save our young people from being used to create problems. without achieving anything, but we must work together to promote the development of our Zongo communities. “
