The Ghana Bar Association (BAR) has asked Asawase constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka to either substantiate his bribery allegations against a Supreme Court judge or to retract and apologize to the judges of the Supreme Court and the judiciary in general.
A GBA statement dated January 12, 2021, said the school finds Muntaka’s allegations offensive and in poor taste.
He added that such accusations “incite hatred of public opinion towards judges, expose them to ridicule and discredit them.”
For the GBA, such bribery allegations with respect to the Judiciary undermine integrity and erode public confidence in the process of administering justice, and can result in lawlessness.
The Asawase legislator is reported to have alleged that a certain Supreme Court judge tried to bribe a member of parliament from the Democratic National Congress (NDC) to vote for the current Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, against the candidate of the NDC. Mr. Alban SK Bagbin.
But for the GBA, “although the 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, that freedom must be exercised with circumspection and must not be used to incite hatred or to subject the Judiciary to ridicule and contempt.”
