Jamie Vardy has scored five goals at the Premier League Emirates Stadium, the most of any visiting player
Jamie Vardy came off the bench to score a regular goal against Arsenal and send Leicester to a Premier League pinnacle point with the Gunners’ first home win since 1973.
The 33-year-old Vardy had missed two games with a calf injury, but was reintroduced after a largely sterile opening hour at Emirates Stadium and quickly ended a 262-minute goal drought in the league. .
The former England international headed in a clever pass from fellow substitute Cengiz Under to score a remarkable 11th Premier League goal against Arsenal. Only Wayne Rooney, at 12, has more.
Until Vardy’s arrival, Leicester had hardly threatened, but now they have won their first three league games away from home for the first time.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were disappointing and despite dominating possession and having 12 shots on target, they never seemed to seriously test Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in his first league loss at home of 2020.
The scourge of Arsenal
Four summers ago, Arsenal tried to push Vardy away from Leicester and continue to regret it with every game.
He only had 11 touches after replacing Dennis Praet, but he still scored the winning goal and was only denied by Bernd Leno’s head for a second as he accelerated the goal at the end.
Leicester lined up without any strikers in their absence, with winger Harvey Barnes nominally playing up front, and his lack of leading edge meant James Maddison had all four efforts, all from outside the box, before number nine Vardy appeared.
Their improvement was as marked as it was predictable with Vardy on the field, and it was no surprise when they took the lead.
Youri Tielemans’ excellent pass over the top freed Under, and he set out to score for free Vardy to score with a hunched header.
There is no more clinical player in the Premier League. Vardy has scored six goals on just nine shots this season – 20 fewer than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and one less than champions defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Last season, Leicester capitulated from a position that seemed certain to deliver Champions League football, when they were 14 points ahead of Manchester United in early February. Could you seal the deal this time?
Predictable gunners firing spotlights
Arsenal thought they had scored in the opening minutes when Alexandre Lacazette headed in from a corner, but Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were offside.
From then on, Arsenal controlled the game for the most part, but despite Kieran Tierney attacking on the left, they struggled to open up to organized visitors.
Arsenal had 11 shots in the first half, but Schmeichel’s only notable save came from an effort after the break, pushing in a decent volley from Hector Bellerin.
Aubameyang, who has gone five Premier League games without a goal for the first time, was largely anonymous.
Thomas Partey made a much-vaunted full-league debut in midfield, but he wasn’t the only one to fail to shine when Arsenal moved the ball painfully slow at times.
