Police have deployed armed men to protect the country’s beaches as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 during the Easter festivities.
This follows Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, who ordered police and other security personnel to close all beaches from Ada to the coastal boundary with the central region indefinitely to ensure sustained compliance with all protocols of Covid-19 safety, especially during Easter celebrations.
“President Akufo-Addo has pointed out on several occasions in his speech to the nation the need to avoid going to pubs, discos and especially the beaches but people do not listen, so in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the IGP , I am sending a stern warning to all of you, on Easter Friday, please stay away from the beaches, there would be a strong security deployment from Ada to the coastal border with the central region, “he said.
Speaking to Joy News, the Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwasi Ofori, pointed out that the main areas of concern for the Accra Regional Police Command are the beaches in the south of the country, so it is necessary to monitor them to ensure that the president’s directive is not mocked by citizens to observe a Holy Week.
“We have a large number of beaches across the country in the south and in Accra we have identified beaches such as Krokrobite Beach, Bojo, Dansoman, Glife, Mensa Guinea, Independence Square, Nungua, Teshie and Sakumono Beaches.” .
In addition, ASP Peter Kwarteng, from the Tema Marine Police, said that they rejected several people who tried to negotiate their entry to the beach facilities.
“We’ve been here since 6am, you can see the Marine Police is here, FPU is here, CTU, Accra Regional Police Command some of the staff are here, La District Police Command some of the staff are here together we want to make sure the place is safe, no one is allowed in.
“Since we got here, a good number of people have been here trying to come in with all kinds of explanations that they operate bars and restaurants, so they want to go there. Some people say they want to go and turn off the light and other things but they are aware that there is no activity on the beach so we tell them and some leave but some continue to explain but how is there no one to whom are you going to sell? ,” he said.
ASP Kwarteng said police would be on duty at the beaches until the Easter festivities are over.
“You know that today is Good Friday and we are here. Tomorrow we will be here until maybe Tuesday. You know, the peak of Easter is Monday, when in normal times you come here, churches, groups, clubs, people come here to have fun but they are aware of the ban. We are also here to make sure that no one comes to have their meeting, ”he said.
Meanwhile, a Public Relations Officer (PRO) at Hotel La Beach, Abban Nunoo, called on the government to relax the ban on the opening of beaches, since the beach has the necessary measures to ensure that they are complied with. Covid-19 protocols.
