Street Sense Organization, a non-governmental organization (NGO) spearheading road safety awareness, has donated items worth GH GH 60,000 to the National Road Safety Authority (GNRA) to enhance their work.
The items, which include 100 Lacoste-branded and reflective vests, and 1,500 pieces of stickers were to support this year’s road safety campaign, “Get there alive, stop road accidents now.”
Ms. Gloria Laryea, a member of the Board of Trustees, presented the articles to Mr. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Minister of Transport, on behalf of the GNRA at the campaign launch in Takoradi.
The program also coincided with the inauguration of the Takoradi Vehicle and Driver Licensing Authority Regional Office and the introduction of Quality Bus Services in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
Ms. Laryea, also a former principal of St John’s Grammar Senior High School, said that Street Sense had been supporting road safety institutions over the years to complement the government’s efforts to keep roads safe.
The organization believed that when officials, mandated to ensure road safety, were well equipped, they would have the courage to perform their work satisfactorily because they knew they were protected, he said.
Ms Laryea said that the data available from January to August this year showed an increase in traffic accidents and asked drivers and other road users to be patient and observe all traffic regulations and safety protocols. .
Therefore, he promised the Organization’s continued preparation to associate other actors in the sector to achieve the common goal.
Mr. Asiamah thanked the NGO for its continued support to the sector and announced that starting next year commercial drivers will be regulated to ensure that only trained and qualified drivers are allowed to operate.
He said that all transport unions would be tasked with ensuring the success of that exercise.
