Argentina and Paraguay will meet on Thursday as the next CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier series continues.
Argentina is coming off two victories over Ecuador and Bolivia. Lionel Messi converted a penalty to help Argentina secure a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, while Joaquín Correa and Lautaro Martínez scored goals to secure the victory over Bolivia.
Paraguay has not qualified for a World Cup since 2010. The team added four points in its first two games: a 1-0 victory over Venezuela and a 2-2 draw against Peru. Ángel Romero scored two goals in those matches, tying for second in scoring behind Neymar, Luis Suárez and Andre Carrillo (three each) in the opening days of the qualifying tournament.

Argentina has a historical advantage against Paraguay with a record of 58-16-33, although they have not won in the last three (0-1-2) and have not won a meeting between the two sides since a 6-1 win in the Copa América 2015. In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Argentina failed to score in their two games, both drawing 0-0 and Paraguay winning 1-0.
After the first set of the 2022 qualifiers, Argentina is in second place (Brazil has a higher goal differential), while Paraguay is two points behind in fourth place.
The top four teams in the table automatically qualify for Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team enters an intercontinental tiebreaker for another place in the World Cup.
