Raheem Sterling was praised by Pep Guardiola during the Manchester City manager’s press conference this weekend.

As Sterling prepares to face his former club Liverpool, Guardiola was asked about the 25-year-old and his development.

“He is one of the most fantastic players I have ever had in my career,” the coach said of the Englishman in his pre-game press conference for Liverpool.

Guardiola was then asked if the player can become one of the best in the world, but he suggested that should not be the priority.

“My advice to him is not to think about this,” replied the coach. “It doesn’t make sense. Just enjoy life and focus and fate will dictate who he is as a player. For him to go further now, it just depends on his performance.

“I’m pretty sure of his mentality and his desire to win and improve. He deserves a lot. All the credit to him.

“I wish that in three, four or five years he would be a much, much better player than he is today.”

“He is a better player now than when he arrived and hopefully in four years he will be better than he is now. It is just a process.”

An indispensable player for Guardiola

Sterling currently earns € 332,000 per week and has a contract that runs until 2023, but the club offers him a new contract whereby his weekly pay package will increase to € 500,000.

For the English player, Guardiola’s stay at the Etihad would be one more reason to bet on his long-term future with the Sky Blues.

The Catalan coach has started at Sterling in 10 of the 11 games Manchester City has played so far in 2020/21. He is expected to start against Liverpool as well, eager to improve his record against his former team after scoring just two goals in the 13 meetings since leaving Anfield.
