STC bus burned by alleged secessionist groupSTC bus burned by alleged secessionist group

Some people suspected of being members of a secessionist group attacked a bus of the State Transport Company in the regional capital of Volta, Ho, and burned one of its buses.

According to a Citi News report, the incident that occurred at midnight on Monday, September 28, involved members of the group firing shots before proceeding to hit drivers.

There is currently a strong security presence in place.

This latest incident comes just days after some 31 allegedly secessionist suspects were placed in pre-trial detention by an Accra circuit court in BNI custody for two weeks.

They face five provisional charges including conspiracy to attend a prohibited assembly, illegal assembly and disturbances.

They reportedly pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Circuit Court Two in Accra on Monday, September 28.

They are being prosecuted on provisional charges of conspiracy to attend a meeting of a prohibited organization; illegal gathering; meet under a prohibited name and organization; and riots.

The prosecution, led by ASP Sylvester Asare, asked the court to take the defendants into custody to allow further investigations into Friday’s incident.

He argued that the police were obliged by law to present the defendants in court knowing full well that the court lacked jurisdiction as the incident occurred in the Volta region.

Background

The Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the North Tongu district of the Volta region were invaded at dawn on Friday 25 September by some armed members of an alleged secessionist group.

The group reportedly seized both police stations simultaneously, overpowered the police officers on duty, broke into the police arsenal and took all the weapons belonging to the police.

“They stripped the police officers on duty, took their weapons and locked them in cells before breaking into the armory,” said an eyewitness.

In a widely circulated video available on GhanaWeb, criminals were seen, after attacking police stations, leading a police patrol.

The vehicle was completely occupied by thugs with guns, singing songs of war and jubilation.

“We are free … we are free forever,” the group of about 50 members could be heard shouting in the video.
