Stakeholder consultation begins on Ghana’s start-up bill

The Ghana Startup Bill technical working committee held a three-day consultative retreat with key stakeholders to refine the first draft of the most anticipated Ghana Startup Bill.

In October this year, the Ministry of Business Development, through its agency, the National Entrepreneurship and Innovations Program (NEIP), launched the formal consultation processes for the development of the Ghana Startup Law, which among other things will provide legal support for the introduction. and promotion of Startups for the creation of employment and wealth.

The process is promoted by NEIP, in collaboration with the Ghana Startup Network, Ghana Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs, Ghana Hubs Network, Private Enterprise Federation, Innovation for Policy (i4Policy), with support from GIZ.

The retreat held at the Forest Hotel in Dodowa during the week was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Business Development, National Program for Entrepreneurship and Innovations, National Youth Authority, General Registry Department, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drug Authority, Ghana Promotion and Investment Center, Venture Capital Trust Fund, Valley View University, representing the academy, among other organizations.

This three-day program gave participants the opportunity to critically access and contribute to the first draft law prepared by the committee after consulting with numerous startups and experts across the country.

The topics covered included the definition of a startup, the certification of startups and the label selection processes.

He also discussed start-up benefits and incentives, including tax breaks and vacations, business support and capacity building programs, market access, intellectual property rights, support for research and development. development, support for investors and mentors, among others.

Topics such as models for financing startup incentives and the benefits of startups for the state were also discussed.

Freda Yawson, Country Coordinator for i4policy and Senior Committee Advisor, facilitated the exercise and ensured that all stakeholder input was properly captured for future discussions at the committee’s next focus group meeting.

The project coordinator and executive director of the Ghana Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs, Mr. Sherif Ghali, indicated that the committee will intensify its consultation sessions with stakeholders to ensure full inclusiveness and ownership of the event, by all who matter.

He also noted that the Committee is expected to complete its work and produce the final bill by the end of this year, which will be submitted to the supervising Ministry, the Ministry of Business Development for subsequent presentation to the Ghanaian Parliament and Cabinet. and advocate for its approval as soon as possible.

Solomon Adjei, the communication officer for the technical working committee and founder of the Ghana Startup Network, closed the curtain on the third day by thanking all stakeholders who complied with his invitation and prayed for their support of the committee throughout the process.
