Tottenham Hotspur started a series of matches in the best possible way.
Over the weekend they beat Manchester City 2-0 in north London but are now preparing to take on Chelsea and Arsenal in succession in the Premier League.
They will also face Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday while playing for LASK next week.
But they are battling a number of injury issues, namely Toby Alderweireld’s.
The Belgian international has been instrumental in Spurs’ form this season, playing in their last six games, with the club keeping three clean sheets in their last four league games.
However, he stopped during the victory over City, being substituted in the 81st minute, to be replaced by Joe Rodon.
And it seems that now he will miss the next two games.
The London Evening Standard reports that Alderweireld has suffered a groin injury and while there is hope the injury is not serious, he will miss the meetings with Ludogorets and Chelsea.
It opens the door for Rodon potentially as a starter against Chelsea, while Japhet Tanganga is also said to be in contention to play the Bulgarian side.
That will boost coach José Mourinho, who also has Davinson Sánchez and Eric Dier to call. Ben Davies is also capable of playing central.
Harry Sherlock from GIVEMESPORT says …
While it is undoubtedly good news that Alderweireld’s injury is not serious, it is a severe blow for him to be absent from the flank for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian’s calm presence and radical skills were on full display against City and both were instrumental in the Spurs victory.
Without him, Mourinho might have to alter his game plan, with no other player capable of distributing from defense so effectively.
There is the depth in the team to cover it (Ludogorets’s game must be three points regardless of the defense selected), but it is always preferable to have a player of his experience in such an important game.
The Spurs will need to find a solution to his absence quickly if they want to take three points away from West London.
