Tottenham’s home Premier League clash against Fulham was postponed due to COVID-19, the Premier League announced on Wednesday.

The match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was called into question on Tuesday after Fulham returned a series of positive tests for COVID-19 earlier this week. The game was scheduled to begin at 6 pm (1 pm ET).

A Premier League statement read: “The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, to be played at 18:00 GMT tonight, has been postponed following a meeting of the Premier League Board of Directors this afternoon.

“Fulham filed a request with the Premier League Board to reorganize the match following a significant increase in positive COVID-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today.

“The Premier League Board has consulted their medical advisers and the decision to postpone the match has been taken as a precaution and with the health of the players and staff as a priority. The group will now be reassessed immediately.

“With a low number of positive tests in the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and in being able to continue to play our matches as scheduled.

“The League wishes those with COVID-19 a quick and safe recovery and will reorganize the postponed match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course.”

Four hours before the scheduled start of the game, Spurs coach José Mourinho said he still didn’t know anything about the state of the game.

He wrote on Instagram: “Game at 6 in the afternoon … We still don’t know if we play. The best league in the world.”

It comes after the Premier League received a total of 18 positive tests for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest on record in the testing program.

A statement from Tottenham said: “The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, and Fulham requested the postponement due to the number of positive COVID-19 cases among their players and staff.

“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a speedy and safe recovery to all those affected.”

Fulham also issued a statement: “This decision follows discussions with the Premier League and the council of Public Health England.

“The players and staff who tested positive have self-isolated in accordance with UK government and Premier League guidelines. We wish the players and staff who tested positive a speedy and safe recovery.”

It also becomes the third Premier League game postponed this season after Manchester City’s clash at Everton was canceled on Monday. Newcastle United’s clash against Aston Villa was also postponed earlier this month.

Mourinho’s Spurs had a chance to climb to third place but will remain in sixth position while Fulham remains in the relegation zone.

Fulham boss Scott Parker was forced to work from home over the weekend when they played Southampton as he isolated himself after testing positive for COVID-19 at home.

However, he was ready to return to the bench on Wednesday after a negative test over the weekend.
