The Ministry of Youth and Sports has told Black Stars coach CK Akonnor to accept a pay cut or forget about his salary.
According to Isaac Asiamah, the ministry’s finances have been affected by the coronavirus, hence the need for Akonnor to take a pay cut.
He told Asempa FM that Akonnor has already been informed that he has agreed in principle to let go of a percentage of his monthly salary.
Isaac Asiamah said that his team, however, is waiting for the FA to work out the payment arrangements for Akonnor’s salaries.
Akonnor, who took office in January, has yet to receive any salary from the ministry after nearly nine months.
Isaac Asiamah has blamed the situation on Covid-19.
“I have told the coach to accept a salary cut in the COVID-19 period before we pay him, we cannot give him the full salary in the era of COVID-19 and we are waiting for a response from the FA,” the minister told Asempa. FM.
“The technician has agreed in principle to accept a salary cut in this era of COVID-19, it remains for the FA to leave with the modalities for us to pay him,” he added.
Despite not getting paid, Akonnor has been working behind the scenes to make sure that once play resumes, everything will be in place for the team.
He recently announced that his captains with Atlético de Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori will get deputy captain appointments.
He is expected to hand over the call-up to Egypt-based John Antwi, who holds the record for the most goals by a foreign player in Egyptian football.
The Black Stars have been billed to play Algeria and Mali in friendly matches next month.
