The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has presented a check for ¢ 10,000 GH and two laptops to the winners of the 2020 National Science and Mathematics Contest (NSMQ), Presbyterian High School for Children (Presec, LEGON) .
He said the gesture was in recognition of the hard work of the students who had made them heroes “by taking the trophy home.”
The Speaker also hosted a dinner for the awardees and a delegation of school alumni in the Parliament Banquet Hall when they paid him a courtesy call in his parliament office on Wednesday.
The visit, led by the school’s board president, the Rev. Ebenezer Markei, who is also the global president of the Presec Old Children’s Association, was to allow the award winners to present the NMSQ trophy to the speaker. , who is also an old boy from Presec.
Conquests
Presec-Legon was the crown champion for the sixth time at the newly completed NSMQ after winning the trophy in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009.
The school, founded in 1938, has also been to the NSMQ finals more than any other school and won the competition more than any other school.
Proud
Upon receiving the delegation, Prof. Oquaye said: “I am very grateful and proud of our students. If you think of giving something back to what he has done to you, it is not difficult at all.
“If I win something, I win it thanks to Presec, where I got my solid foundation,” he said.
By counting some former students who won awards and made Presec globally proud, Professor Oquaye acknowledged that it was due to the support and training he received from his alma mater that he had become who he was today.
Pass on the tradition
He noted that the students who won the NSMQ, in addition to showing good academic performance, also demonstrated a deep sense of discipline and good behavior during the contest.
“When I saw the guys from Presec, three good gentlemen on TV that day, apart from their academic achievements, if you look them up and down you’d be proud of them, no baggy pants. They were prepared physically, mentally, spiritually and morally; all in one person.
“This is because those who started the institution wanted to achieve something and by God’s grace they have achieved it,” he said.
Reminding the school students that they consider it a privilege to attend Presec, the speaker encouraged them to also allow the acquired Christian formation to be reflected in all areas of their lives in order to “pass on tradition”.
The president of the council
Rev. Markwei recounted how the board lobbied the school authority to do everything possible to support the NSMQ team to win the contest.
He thanked the Spokesperson for also commissioning the school authority to strive to outperform all schools in the competition, a position which he said had contributed to the success the school had achieved.
