A member of Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Rockson Dafeamekpor is accusing the police of Rambo-style abuse of power by arresting a journalist, Mr. David Tamakloe.
Tamakloe was allegedly arrested at gunpoint by Homeland Security agents Thursday for false publication allegations and taken to the airport police station.
In an interview with Citi NewsDafeamekpor, who is also a Member of Parliament for South Dayi, said the action by officials to arrest and detain the journalist until after Monday is inhumane and smacks of abuse of police powers.
“It’s Easter, for God’s sake, you should have your freedom and then on Monday or Tuesday, you can come back. Initially, they said that he was trying to blackmail someone who had come to complain, but when they arrived at the station, the charge was the publication of false information. His lawyer asked where the post was alleged to be fraud, but the police were unable to produce any such evidence or post. ”
He added that he believes the arrest is just an attempt to prevent the story from being made public, which is not correct.
“What are the reasons for keeping him in custody until next week? When the charge is a misdemeanor. If you look at the charges that the police are after, they said false post, but he has not released the story yet. We think it’s more of an attempt to prevent me from doing more research on the story and publicity, ”he added.
