Some of the Akufo-Addo ministers underperformed the first term – Dr. Lord Mensah

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School has noted that most ministers in the Akufo-Addo-led government performed below expectations in their first term in office.

President Akufo-Addo in his first term appointed 125 ministers, which he says will accelerate the government’s development agenda.

But evaluating their performance at PM Express on Monday, Dr. Lord Mensah said that the benefit derived from the appointees was not noticeable after the four-year period.

“If you marry these two, clearly, you will find that most of the ministers were performing below value for money.”

He said that although Akufo-Addo had expressed his commitment to protect the public purse by ensuring good value for money, the rhetoric did not develop with the ministers.

Dr. Mensah said that corruption is another cost that is overlooked, “we isolate him from the ministerial position.”

The keynote speaker, however, emphasized the need to match “the amount of corruptions that will occur in his ministry, added to the cost we use to decorate him as a minister,” with the benefit he obtained from the ministry at the end of the four years in The charge.

“If you marry both of them, you will realize that indeed, chuck of the ministers did not work,” he emphasized.

Dr. Mensah also observed that some Ghanaians have assumed a culture of making wealth through politics, hence the level of corruption exhibited.

“Ghanaian culture has come to understand that if you are in politics, you must be well decorated.”

In addition, he expressed his disappointment at about six laws passed in Parliament between 2017 and 2018 to help eradicate corruption, questioning their effectiveness.

“Witness Protection Law 2018959, Law of the Special Prosecutor’s Office, Law of Restructuring and Business Insolvency, Law of Regulation and Public Financial Management, Law of Right to Information and Law of Companies, but the question is where do they bite?”
