All eyes may have been on Amad Diallo, but it could be his Under 23 teammate Joe Hugill who is next in line to make his first-team debut at Manchester United.
The 17-year-old made the headlines on Saturday by scoring four goals as United’s under-23s defeated bitter rivals Liverpool 6-3 on their own patch.
That brought the forward’s tally to 14 goals overall this season, having scored eight times for the Under-23s and another six for the Under-18s. The teen’s stats are even more impressive when you consider that he has accomplished the feat in just 17 games, of which only 10 have been as a starter.
And Hugill’s quad has caught the eye of Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When asked if Diallo, who joined a £ 37 million transfer from Atalanta last month, would have some first-team action soon, the Norwegian replied: ‘We will give him time to adjust.
‘If we get out of that game [vs Liverpool], I would choose Joe Hugill.
“Four goals from Hugill, he’s also a great striker, we can’t wait to see him develop.”
“Amad is off to a good start and why didn’t Joe shoot the penalty to score five goals, I’m going to ask him.”
Hugill, who joined the club from Sunderland last summer, could follow players like Marcus Rashford and, more recently, Mason Greenwood as they move up United’s ranks to play for the first team.
As for Diallo, Solskjaer was also pleased with his debut in the U23 category, as he scored the other two United goals of the weekend, including a penalty from Panenka.
“I don’t think it will be long before I make a team of the day,” he added of the 18-year-old winger.
