Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels that getting Anthony Martial to run more during games is key to his development.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the best is yet to come from Anthony Martial after the Manchester United forward recovered from his slump with a series of impressive displays.
United boss Solskjaer has been urging Martial to cover more ground during matches and thinks that is having a positive effect.
Martial had a goal and an assist in an impressive display as a late substitute in a 2-0 win over Everton in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
That came after he had the same production in a 3-2 comeback at Sheffield United in the Premier League, as well as posting two assists in a 6-2 home win over Leeds United.
Solskjaer believes that the criticism and red card Martial received in the infamous 6-1 home loss to Tottenham in October halted his progress in early 2020-21.
Despite his recent improvement, Martial is averaging just 0.14 goals every 90 minutes on the field in the Premier League this season; seven United players perform better in that category.
But ahead of a key game in Leicester City on December 26, Solskjaer is increasingly excited about the 25-year-old’s progress.
“[Martial] he has made important contributions lately, he has attended, he has scored goals, “Solskjaer told reporters.
“He’s getting fitter and he showed it against Leeds. He knows I’m with him on this, his career stats from that game set a new standard for him, which I want to see more of.
“He’s always going to have quality. Maybe his confidence was hurt a little bit by what happened earlier in the season with the red card.” [against Tottenham] and has had some criticism.
“But Anthony is going to get better and better and when we get Mason [Greenwood], Marcus [Rashford] and Anthony shooting at full blast, we’ll be an even bigger threat to teams.
“These guys know what I want from my team.”
Marcial scores best when it comes to assists. By Opta statistics, he has 0.42 per 90 minutes on the court, putting him ahead of fellow forwards Rashford (0.33) and Greenwood (0).
Of the United players who will play for at least 500 minutes this season, only Bruno Fernandes (0.43) is ahead of him.
United have won each of their last 10 away games in the Premier League and are looking to become the third team in history, after Arsenal and Chelsea, to win 11 consecutive games when they face Leicester.
It has historically been a good game for United, who have scored in each of their last 22 Premier League meetings with Leicester. Against neither team has he had a longer scoring streak in the competition.
