Compliance with social distancing against the spread of the Coronavirus has not been enforced in the cells of the Sunyani Central Prison (SCP) due to overcrowding of inmates.

Ghana Prison Service (GPS) Bonus Regional Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Johann Nii Narh Nartey, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview.

DSP Nartey said that the male cells that were supposed to accommodate about 450 inmates now housed 880 inmates, but the situation in the female cells was totally different as the inmate population was less than 20.

According to him, in addition to the challenge of social distancing, the SCP authority with the support of the local Covid -19 Management Team were doing everything possible to ensure compliance with security protocols between inmates and officers to prevent the spread and infection at the site. site.

DSP Nartey said that each inmate had been provided with three washable nasal masks and that there was an immediate replacement of a lost or destroyed nasal mask to protect the inmates from danger.

He said the prison cells had been disinfected by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a sanitation company, and assured that disinfection would continue periodically.

DSP Nartey said the new inmates’ temperatures were taken prior to entry and they were also isolated in a quarantine cell for two weeks under the supervision of a health staff.

However, he added that the quarantine cell also had an isolation block where those who became ill were admitted for treatment.

He said skin diseases were common among inmates and called on drug manufacturing companies and pharmaceutical wholesale and retail stores to donate drugs to the Service to save the lives of some inmates.

DSP Nartey appealed to philanthropists and charities to assist the SCP with tissues, gloves, soaps, disinfectants, and detergents.
