Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa has revealed that so far three separatist groups have formed in the region seeking secession from the country.

In an interview in PM Express by JoyNews On Friday, Dr. Letsa said, the groups – the West West Togo separatist, the Homeland Study Group and the West West Togo Restoration Front (WTRF) – although they are descendants of the same group with the same course, they exhibit some slight differences.

According to him, the WTRF group responsible for the attack on the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in North Tongu district in the early hours of Friday is more militarized than the others.

He added that the three separatist groups have been under the surveillance of the Volta Regional Security Council since its creation in 2017.

“We have been monitoring them for more than two years and we intend to deal with them,” he said.

In the early hours of Friday, a group of armed men believed to be members of a secession group forcibly seized the Aveyime and Mepe police stations simultaneously, overpowered the police officers, broke into the armory and took all weapons.

Commenting on this, the Volta region minister said the nation’s security forces had anticipated the attack on Friday morning by securing vital facilities in the group’s region.

He said they suspected that the roadblocks on the Mepe-Sege road and the Accra-Ho road in Juapong were designed as a distraction to drive security forces away from those locations.

“We knew there was going to be some activity last night and we had to protect a vital facility to make sure the region’s economy is not negatively affected.

“So we were able to prevent some more serious attacks that were planned by this group,” he said.

Currently, the secessionists have been repressed and detained after a shootout with the military.

They were later transferred to the capital, Accra, to be questioned and investigated by the Office of National Intelligence (BNI).
