The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has received a GH ¢ 20 million insurance package from SIC Insurance Company to support journalists in covering the general elections on 7 December.

The package will cover 500 journalists who will be accredited to report on the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The insurance, which runs from November 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021, provides each beneficiary with compensation of up to GH ¢ 40,000 for death and permanent disability.

In the event of death, the journalist’s dependents would receive GH ¢ 40,000 lump sum and monthly payments of GH ¢ 3,300 for up to 12 months, while in the case of permanent disability, the journalist will receive both the lump sum and monthly. Payments.

GJA and SIC Insurance signed an agreement to this effect yesterday at the Ghana International Press Center in Accra.

Media support

SIC Insurance Company General Manager of Operations, Mr. Faris Attrickie, pointed out that while elections were the centerpiece of democracy, there could be no democracy without journalists.

He indicated that the maintenance of the country’s democracy depended on the tireless efforts of journalists who were habitually exposed to risks in the line of duty.

“It is in this context that the SIC has deemed it prudent to provide this package to ensure journalists are covered while conducting their activities during the December elections,” Attrickie said.

“Anyone who wants to destroy democracy will destroy journalism first, and that is what most dictators do. We want to prevent this from happening, and that is why we have taken the first step in allowing Ghana corporations to come in so that something can be done to allow journalists to operate safely, ”said Attrickie, who signed the agreement in SIC name. additional.

Praise

GJA President Mr. Affail Monney signed on behalf of the GJA and praised SIC for helping media professionals with “such an incredible offer”.

He said the company had planted an incredible feat and unconditional love for the media at a time when it was needed most.

“They will surely reap much more than they think or imagine in the name of reciprocity,” he added.

Media effort

Monney said that seven times in a row, the country, with the fundamental role of the media, had held successful elections with three alternations of power.

That, he indicated, was a step towards democratic consolidation, and stressed, however, that there should be no room for complacency.

“The high-voltage tensions and red-hot anger that characterize the Ghanaian elections are proof enough that our democracy is still on stilts,” Monney said.

He said the media once again had an onerous responsibility not only to shape a decent campaign speech, but also to ensure that the country remained firmly on the path of democratic ascent.
