The former Red Devils winger is happy to see a defender who has faced much criticism in the past proving that he can star in his club and his country.

Luke Shaw has become England’s best left-back, claims Luke Chadwick, and the Manchester United defender is seen to have improved his game after facing additional competition from Alex Telles.

The Red Devils opted to reinforce their ranks at the rear during the last transfer window.

A highly rated Brazilian was pulled from Porto, and Telles arrived at Old Trafford with an impressive record when it comes to goals and assists.

Shaw has rarely been prolific in those areas, but the 25-year-old can have an impact on both ends of the field.

He has been showing a lot this season, with a man who has faced much criticism during his time in Manchester starting to unlock the potential United always believed he had.

Chadwick believes that Telles’ presence has helped that cause as Shaw is no longer a guaranteed starter when in shape, and it could be that a regular spot is now nailed for the club and the country.

Former Red Devils winger Chadwick said Caught offside From a hardworking England international: “Luke Shaw’s level of performance has been excellent since Telles entered the building and the competition for the left-back position will elevate both players’ play to make the team and stay there.

“Shaw appears to be the first choice at the moment, but knowing that Telles is waiting behind the scenes will keep him on his toes and hopefully maintain the consistency he is showing.

“In shape, it’s hard to think of many better left backs than Luke Shaw, he has all the qualities and the ability to get into the England squad and really challenge that position.

“Injury issues have held him back in the last two seasons, but hopefully that is behind him and he can really move on and be the player he is more than capable of becoming.”

Manchester United 2020-21

Shaw watched another hour of Premier League football against Leeds on Sunday before being replaced by Telles.

United rioted in that contest as they clinched a 6-2 win, with Daniel James another one who made the most of his opportunity to attract the attention of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a global television audience.

Chadwick said of the Wales international, who has been restricted to just four top flight starts this season: “It was great to see Dan James have such a positive impact.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen him start in weeks, and once again Ole showed his tactical savvy by bringing him in for a game that suited his style perfectly.

“Once United broke the first pressure from Leeds, there was plenty of room for the rhythmic players to move forward to bring the team to the last third and expose the Leeds bottom line to create opportunities.

“James has done this numerous times to great effect, and when there is room for him there aren’t many faster players when they travel with the ball.

“In retrospect, the yellow card was a bad decision by the referee, it is not easy to stand up after a forearm to the face!

“What James offers, even when he doesn’t have an attacking threat, is an excellent pace of work and he will always make a change to help the team.

“It was brilliant to see it all fit in for him and finished off with a really good goal that was fully deserved.”

“I like it [Anthony] Martial, I hope he is the confidence booster needed to really start the second half of the season after what has been a difficult first half for him at times. “
