The Export-Import Bank of Ghana (Exim) pokes fun at the release of a song by its brand ambassador, Shatta Wale.

The song titled I AM MADE IN GHANA falls on Friday September 17, 2020 and is expected to be implemented under Exim Bank’s ‘Made-In-Ghana 4P’ campaign.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage Ghanaians to support Ghanaian-made products and make local industries competitive. It focuses on four thematic areas, namely; produce, promote, buy and prosper.

As part of the campaign and in conjunction with GEXIM’s support for the Creative Industry, the Bank has hired brand ambassadors and influencers, including Shatta, to promote the campaign.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the bank posted;

The relationship between Shatta and Exim Bank came to light recently in Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) when Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak raised concerns about a GH GH 2 million payment to Shatta Wale (privately known as Charles Nii Armah Mensah).

The MP said it was unwise for Exim Bank to pay such an amount to an artist to promote products made in Ghana.

Ghana Exim Bank confirms brand ambassador contracts with Shatta Wale, Agya Koo

He said: “I mentioned GHS2 million that went to Shatta Wale, but the deputy CEO says they wouldn’t know who the provider selected. And this is not to say that we have a problem with Shatta Wale getting a certain amount of money to do any work. But the Ghanaian public deserves to know how much came out and who got it because their responses were not satisfactory. “

In response to the query, the bank’s deputy chief executive, Kwame Adu-Darkwa, said the bank had engaged a media consulting team to address the matter.

He insisted that Exim Bank did not pay the dancehall musician directly.

“You will be surprised how good brand ambassadors can be at promoting a particular industry. Sometimes the thing to do is, if you’ve done an incredible job, it will be good for people to know what their options are, and having a good brand ambassador to do that makes sense. “

For his part, committee chairman James Klutse Avedzi said the committee will soon invite bank officials to provide details of such payments to the dancehall artist and other brand ambassadors.

The bank subsequently confirmed the existence of one-year brand ambassador contracts with actor Agya Koo and Shatta Wale.

The Bank’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Richard Osei Anane, later insisted that he was not at liberty to disclose the value of the contracts, which were reported to have cost a total of 2.25 million GH ₵ due to a deal of nondisclosure.
