Sergio Ramos joined an exclusive club on Tuesday night when he scored his 100th goal for Real Madrid.
The Spaniard accomplished the feat with a header during Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League.
That was his 55th header for the club, plus 21 penalties, two free throws and 22 goals with his feet from open play.
Ramos’ feat is all the more remarkable considering he is a defender. His brilliant career at Real has included 659 games, 100 goals and 22 trophies since he arrived from Sevilla in 2005.
And reflecting on his career at Marca, Ramos has chosen his five favorite goals for the Spanish giants of his 100.
Reaching number 5 for the Real captain is his first goal for the club in the Champions League. That happened during their first season with Real, when they traveled to Greece to face Olympiacos.
Ramos put his team ahead with an impressive header off the back post from a Raúl Bravo cross. Sadly for Ramos, it turned out to be a failed effort as they lost in Athens 2-1 to former Barcelona striker Rivaldo scoring the winning goal after being set up by an emerging talent by the name of Yaya Touré.
Fourth place is a dramatic draw against eternal rival Barcelona during their LaLiga encounter in December 2016. Barça had gone ahead with a header from Luis Suárez.
That goal seemed to condemn Real Madrid to their first defeat of the season, but Ramos pounced in the 89th minute with a header from Luka Modric. That goal kept Real within six points of defending champion Barça after 14 games at the top of the table, and it proved to be a watershed moment as Real fought for the title of their fiercest foe.
The Camp Nou draw is the only national goal to rank in the top five for Ramos, and the rest are part of the Champions League efforts.
Third on the list is another header from Ramos, this time the first goal in the impressive 4-0 win over then-Champions League champion Bayern Munich in the second leg of the 2014 semi-final.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Ramos put them ahead 2-0 on aggregate with an emphatic header off the back post from a Modric corner. Four minutes later he would score again with a header, this time from a free kick by Angel di Maria.
Ramos’ runner-up arrives against rivals Atlético de Madrid in the 2016 Champions League final, in what was a replay of the 2014 masterpiece (more on that later).
A man who was not afraid of the great opportunity the captain had to shoot close and put Real ahead in the 15th minute. Toni Kroos’s deep free kick was launched by Gareth Bale at the near post and Ramos put the Atlético goalkeeper in front of him Jan Oblak to score. Real would eventually be tied by a Yannick Carrasco draw before winning 5-3 on penalties, with Ramos scoring his fourth from the point.
Yet despite the aforementioned goals, none of them compare to Ramos’ top pick, his goal in the 2014 Champions League final against Atlético.
“Goals are like children,” he told Marca. “It’s very difficult to keep one, but there has been a very special one that has marked my career, like the one achieved in Lisbon against Atlético.
That goal is especially special for the 34-year-old, as it came in the final moments of the match. Atlético came close to becoming European champions for the first time in their history thanks to Diego Godin’s goal in the 36th minute. However, Ramos forced the game into extra time with a header in the 93rd minute from a Modric corner. .
Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo were present to score in extra time to give Real the 4-1 victory and finally their tenth European Cup known as ‘La Décima’.
