Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his team needs Sergio Aguero back in top form, but is willing to be patient with the forward’s recovery from injury to avoid further setbacks.
Aguero, who was out for five months after undergoing knee surgery for an injury sustained in the early stages of last season’s restart, made just three appearances this season before sustaining a hamstring injury.
Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Tottenham turned into a three-game win for City, who have failed to score more than once in a single Premier League game since a 5-2 loss in September to Leicester.
Guardiola knows an attack and Aguero’s firing will be crucial to reviving City’s internal campaign, but warns that he will have to be cautious about how he uses the 32-year-old once he recovers.
“I’m not going to say we don’t need Sergio, we need him,” Guardiola said after the Spurs setback.
“But Sergio, who is 32 years old, was out for five months with a dangerous and difficult injury. He came back and played 50 or 55 minutes and is injured again.
“We want him and I want Sergio to be in shape because I’m not discovering now how important he is to us.
“But we have to be careful [to make sure he does] Don’t go back and get injured again. You have to see the right time to put it on again and hopefully it will be soon and I can maintain regularity to play. “
Spurs make a big statement when City fall in love with José’s classic
Tottenham made a great title statement when a classic Jose Mourinho operation saw them beat Manchester City 2-0.
Spurs had just 33 percent possession and four shots to City’s 22, but once again took the win against Pep Guardiola’s City in a clinical smash and grip show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
During a spirited opening, the Spurs took the lead when Heung-Min Son ducked under Ederson from the edge of the box after a scraped pass from Tanguy Ndombele caught a high line out of the city (5). It was Spurs’ only shot on goal in the first 59 minutes when Mourinho’s team absorbed the pressure from City.
Despite some City half chances on either side of the break, Mourinho’s approach continued to work as they grabbed a second man of the match, Harry Kane, brilliantly spinning midway through and feeding Giovani Lo Celso to finish under Ederson again alone. 35 seconds later. comes (65).
City were affected by that as Spurs closed out victory, and the result means that Mourinho, celebrating a year at Spurs, sees his team at the top of the Premier League for at least 24 hours. City’s poor start continues, ranking 10th with just 12 points from eight games.
