Retired referee Eric Owusu Mensah has supported the head of the Ghana Referees Association (RAG) Joe Debrah’s reprimand to the Ghana Football Association of their expenses after Congress approved monetary allowances and benefits for the President and the Executive Council of the Ghana Association of Referees.
According to the Kumasi referee, the Ghana Football Association must prioritize the main players in the game at the expense of their personal interests.
Speaking on Nhyira Power Sports on Monday, referee Mensah expressed dissatisfaction with the little attention paid to referees and other game stakeholders.
“The GFA hierarchy must ensure that the main architects of the game are satisfied before they enjoy the revenue accrued by them,” he said.
“They cannot enjoy while the clubs, players and referees suffer.
“When a referee takes a trip to officiate a match and wins GH 900 with all expenses included, but a member of the Executive Council takes GH 1800 for sitting in a meeting where there is no risk, it is not correct.”
Referee Mensah also believes that the welfare or well-being of the clubs and players, who are the primary stakeholders in the game, should be paramount to the Ghana Football Association.
“How many of these Executive Council members have slept in a hotel that costs less than GH200? The clubs are making fans flock to the stadium to watch games but they are suffering.” he added
RAG President Joe Debrah advocates that the Ghana Football Association increase the remuneration of referees once they have enough money to spend on the president and executive council.
