The Ghana Police Service warned its officers to wear unauthorized clothing for election work on December 7 that will be subject to disciplinary procedures.

Police in a statement said that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, also ordered that no police officer wear beards, except those who have been advised not to shave by medical officers.

However, plainclothes officers from the Police Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Departments (CID and PID) will wear their approved open and concealed uniforms with their ID cards available for identification.

The IGP directives follow public inquiries into the police uniforms to be used for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections after a video was released showing police officers sitting in an armored police vehicle.

Speculation on social media suggested that the Vehicle’s occupants were vigilant, but Police insist the speculations are false and unfortunate.

“The people seen in the video are sworn officers of the Ghana Police Service, who participated in special operations of a march en route in the Upper East region. The brown uniform and the headdress that some of them wear are clothing of training, “the statement said. .

“In light of public inquiries into the police uniforms to be used for the presidential and parliamentary elections this year, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has ordered that all police officers wear the uniforms of traditional police, which are in the colors of blue-black, black and police camouflage; either office or operational clothing with the appropriate headgear for police functions. (CID and PID) in normal clothing will wear their approved open and concealed uniforms with their ID cards available for identification.

“The IGP has further mandated that no police officer wear beards, except those who have been advised not to shave by medical officers, backed by the” Shave with Excuses “document.

“The public should be aware that any police officer wearing unauthorized clothing for election functions would be engaging in professional misconduct, which is subject to disciplinary procedures.”
