Barcelona faced Osasuna at the Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon hungry to regain their national form.
The Catalans fly in Europe, with a record of 100% in the Champions League and qualification for the round of 16 of the competition assured with two games to go.
What’s more, they confirmed it last Tuesday in Ukraine with a 4-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv leaving two key players, Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong, at home in Spain resting.
It is in this context that he entered the clash with Osasuna, hungry for three points to transfer his rapid start in Europe to La Liga.
The match was the first Barcelona have played since Diego Maradona passed away on Wednesday, and the club paid its respects before the match with an emotional tribute. Maradona spent two years at the Camp Nou.
The Blaugrana closed in early when Antoine Griezmann slashed a ball on the right side to make way for Philippe Coutinho, only for the Brazilian’s effort to be cleared later off the line.
Then, at the stroke of half an hour, Barcelona broke through. Messi swept a magnificent ball to the left to find Jordi Alba, who crossed for Coutinho.
The Brazilian’s effort was rebuffed, but Martin Braithwaite was available to step up and cross the line. Messi appeared to be tempted to mimic Maradona’s infamous Hand of God moment to make sure he crossed the line, but he held back.
Shortly after, Barcelona doubled their advantage thanks to Antoine Griezmann. The ball fell to the Frenchman on the edge of the area after a skillful team play was broken, and he was right with his sumptuous volley.
What a goal from Antoine Griezmann! Absolute beauty in one shot. #BarçaOsasuna
