Rhoda Osei-Afful, project leader of the Coalition of National Election Observers (CODEO), has underscored the need for security personnel to display professionalism during the 2020 elections.
Speaking on the eve of the JoyNews elections, he noted that security agents have been deployed to various electoral districts across the country to ensure the smooth running of the electoral process and not to intimidate people from exercising their right to vote.
His comment comes after some residents of the Volta region expressed concern that they have become frightened after seeing military officers patrolling their area.
But the CODEO representative pointed out that security plays a crucial role in the democratic process, however, acting in compliance with duty can contribute to interrupting the process.
“They must ensure that polling stations are safe places for people to vote, we do not expect that at any time their own conduct will affect the process,” he said.
Commenting on the safety of the security services leadership, Ms Osei-Afful was optimistic that the men and women who have been deployed would show professionalism in their operations.
“It is not seen that the application of the law is done in a fair and firm manner, there are places where we have registered electoral violence as far as this election is concerned and even in previous years,” he said.
