Al Ahli’s Man Looks To Upcoming Black Stars Afcon 2022 Qualifiers Against North Africans
Ghana’s forward Samuel Owusu acknowledges that a victory over Sudan in their next qualifying match for the African Cup of Nations 2022 (Afcon) brings the Black Stars closer to their dream of ruling the continent once again.
Ghana will host Sudan in a Group C match at Cape Coast on November 12, five days before a reverse match.
The Black Stars are looking to reach the final of the tournament and win the trophy for the first time since 1982.
“For me, as a player, I want to be in Afcon to see if we can bring the cup back to Ghana and for now I think we have to beat Sudan in Ghana because we have already scored the first six points. [from the opening two games]”Owusu told the official website of the Ghana Football Association.
“Scoring Sudan in Ghana will help us qualify for Afcon. For now, my focus is to qualify first for Afcon.”
Owusu also shared his thoughts on Ghana’s new coach, CK Akonnor, who divided opinions after overseeing his first set of assignments last month.
In their opener, the Black Stars succumbed to a disappointing 3-0 loss to Mali in a friendly draw.
Three days later, Akonnor and his teammates made amends with a 5-1 win over Asian champion Qatar in a second test match in preparation for Sudan’s double.
“CK is a very good coach, so I just want to beg the Ghanaians to give him time to get the team in good shape,” Owusu said.
“I can assure the Ghanaians that with CK, we can bring Afcon to Ghana because he is a very good coach, even giving new players [the chance] to demonstrate its quality.
“I think it’s good because I like coaches who give the little ones the opportunity to play and express themselves.
“I want to beg the Ghanaians to give the players and the coach time because we have a new coach and some new players.
“In football, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, so I ask Ghanaians to have time with us and with that we will do everything possible for the nation.”
Owusu, who plays in club football for Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli, was right in Ghana’s win over Qatar, and also helped in the match.
He is one of 23 players called up for the Sudan games.
