The Ministry of Works and Housing has said it will ensure the completion of work on the abandoned Saglemi housing project started by the previous government.

“The government is committed to continuing the project and making sure it is completed regardless of the challenges,” said Sector Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye, after a tour of some affordable housing sites in Saglemi, Kpone and Topic in the Greater Accra Region yesterday.

He said that despite the difficulties associated with the project, the government will seek strategic investors to help complete it, including all incomplete housing projects across the country.

The sites the minister visited were the Saglemi project, the Kpone affordable housing in the community of Tema 26, the National Housing Mortgage Fund project in the community of Tema 22 and the Kaiser Flats development project in the community of Tema 4 .

Saglemi Project

While he described the Saglemi project as a great idea, he said that the conception, design and implementation of the project were not executed well, “and that’s why we find ourselves in this situation.”

Asenso-Boakye, however, said he was committed to putting the past behind him and charting a way forward by ensuring the prompt completion of the project and others across the country through innovative means of fundraising.

The Saglemi housing project was initially planned to deliver 5,000 housing units. However, the scope of the works was revised, which has become the subject of police investigation.

The Director of Housing of the Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr. Theresa Tuffour, said that of the 1,502 units at the Saglemi project site, 1,389 were completed by contractors, pending the installation of utilities.

He said 386 units were in various stages of completion, while 139 townhouses had been completed, awaiting the provision of utilities.

The minister said the government’s offer to address the country’s housing deficit, which is around 2 million, would not be achieved if such projects are not completed and delivered for occupancy.

TDCL

In Community 26, Asenso-Boakye inspected ongoing works on the Kpone affordable housing project, which was started by the government of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, but was abandoned when the NDC came to power in 2009.

It was later handed over to Tema Development Company Limited, which is building 3,016 apartments, with complementary facilities, such as a school, a police station and a shopping center.

The General Manager in charge of Operations at TDCL, Mr. Samuel Asante, who informed the minister, said that the project, which would be completed by the end of 2022, would comprise studio, one-bedroom and more than 1,376 two-bedroom apartments. . with social amenities.

He commended the government for prioritizing housing in the second term of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s presidency, saying that with the necessary support, the TDCL could partner with the government to provide affordable housing for all.
