Kwame Governs Agboza, a senior member of the Parliament’s Roads and Transportation Committee, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will ensure absolute safety for Okada’s businessmen should they come to power after the 2020 elections.
According to him, the law that will legalize the operationalization of Okada in the country will focus mainly on the safety and protection of both men and Okada’s clients.
He spoke in response to concerns raised about the safety of the okada that will be considered during the processes for passage of the law.
In an interview on Citi TV’s The Big Issue, Mr. Agboza said: “In fact, motorcycles don’t have the protection that a vehicle does. I think the NDC is quite clear on this and we fully understand the concerns of the Ghanaians on the issue of security. The new law that will be approved will put security at the center of that legislation and the application of everything we propose. “
The debate on the legalization of the okada business was generated after the standard bearer of the Democratic National Congress, John Dramani Mahama, pledged to legalize the business in which he was voted as president on December 7, 2020.
Meanwhile, the okada business is currently banned in Ghana following a law passed in 2012.
But the Adaklu MP argued that the okada business has created more jobs since its introduction in the country, so a new law is long overdue to legalize okada.
“There are many young people who have finished school but cannot find work, so they look for what they can do. There are many young people you see riding motorcycles and transporting people from one place to another. “
The member of the ranking of roads and transport justified that, although according to the laws of Ghana, the okada is illegal, in reality, “the okada has become part of us.”
He added that “it is here to stay and it cannot be stopped. So I have suggested that when we take office, we will legalize the okada but regulate it. We will regulate it and give them the necessary training so that they can conduct their business safely. They must obey all traffic regulations in order to practice their profession ”.
