Ryan Giggs explains the reason behind Sir Alex Ferguson selling David Beckham of Man Utd

Ryan Giggs feels that Sir Alex Ferguson made the right decision by selling David Beckham of Man Utd when he did.

Ferguson had a knack for unloading star players, either just before their peak years came to an end, or when it was best suited for the club to let them go.

Several key figures were allowed to leave Old Trafford during Fergie’s tenure, but arguably none as important as Beckham, who left for Real Madrid in 2003.

United received a decent amount of £ 25 million at the time for the then 28-year-old, though he bade farewell to the first of the established Class of 92 graduates.

However, after a season in which Ferguson and Beckham had a highly publicized encounter, Giggs insists that it was the right decision for everyone involved.

When asked about Fergie’s penchant for letting great players go, Giggs told beIN Sports’ The Champions Club: “I think most of the time it was for soccer reasons.

“It was to get someone or the player to lose that influence. Or it was just time.”

“David Beckham’s tastes were getting too much, where he was really arguing every other week and it was just time for both sides to move in and that happened on a few occasions.”

Fergie and Beckham’s relationship apparently never recovered after the United boss had kicked a boot to the star in the locker room, cutting the midfielder above the eye.

Beckham went on to enjoy a successful four-year stint with Madrid, before going through LA Galaxy, AC Milan and PSG, although United moved quickly to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Giggs, on the other hand, managed to dodge Fergie’s ax, ending his career with Man Utd, though he admitted that he had been close to moving on at the same time that Beckham was sold.

“Around 2003/2004 I didn’t have a great start to the season. It was the summer that David Beckham was, it was probably the closest I was to going,” he explained.

“My form was not great, and it was the transition period where I went from being a flying winger to going a little deeper. I lost that rhythm.” [Ferguson] I never actually said it.

“I finished the season pretty strong. If I hadn’t, who knows.”
