Ryan Giggs has revealed that Paul Scholes was still pushing to play every week for Manchester United in the twilight of his career.
Both Giggs and Scholes extended their careers at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, with the Welshman breaking the club’s appearance record and playing beyond his 40th birthday. Scholes, on the other hand, retired in May 2011, before returning from retirement in January 2012.
And Giggs has now told the beIN SPORTS Champions Club that Scholes’ desire to play as much as he could was the difference. Giggs admitted that he was happy with a supporting role, which meant he could continue as a player in his season 24 at Old Trafford.
“I adapted quite well, I understood. Scholesy was a little different, “said Giggs.
“Scholesy wanted to play every week. It was then that he retired and returned because he missed it.
“He could go two weeks without playing and then go into the team and have an impact. Scholesy couldn’t do that. He found it difficult. He wanted to play every game, even if his body didn’t tell him that.
“Scholesy was a little harder for Sir Alex to handle, while it was easier for me.”
The two Class of 92 academy graduates are now revered as United legends, though Giggs finished with two more Premier League winners medals than Scholes: 13-11. Both spent time in United’s coaching staff before leaving. the club and now Salford City itself, with Giggs also in charge of the Welsh national team.
