Ryan Giggs could be Man United’s next manager, says Mark Hughes

Manchester United legend Mark Hughes says Ryan Giggs will be considered as the club’s next manager.

While rumors are intensifying in the press about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s possible replacement by former Spurs player Mauricio Pochettino, Hughes believes there may be a dark horse in the race.

Giggs enjoyed a brief stint as interim manager in 2014 when David Moyes was fired and he also served as Louis van Gaal’s assistant for the next two seasons.

“ He was obviously a mentor to Sir Alex for many years and in later years he was able to work alongside him, ” Hughes said. BBC Sport.

He then worked very closely with Van Gaal for a couple of years, which I felt was a good decision from him and the club.

“ I thought it was with a view to him taking over when Van Gaal left. It was not like that, they made the decision to seek a bigger name in terms of management: Mourinho.

“ I think that was pushed maybe a little bit by Guardiola’s Manchester City appointment. Maybe they felt they needed to like for like like, which probably hurt Ryan’s chances. ‘

But Hughes believes that after an impressive stint as Wales coach, in which he won 11 games, drew three and lost eight, Giggs might now be ready to take the helm at Old Trafford if Solskjaer leaves.

“When we qualified for the European Championship against Hungary, I was there and I thought Wales at night was excellent,” he reflected.

‘You started to see what Ryan was trying to do with the team, following Cookie [Chris Coleman], and I think it has become the role.

‘Ryan is in a good place in his management career. It is on an upward trend.

He’s probably more likely to have a shot at Manchester United than when Van Gaal left.

“If he goes to the European Championship and he does well, then there is no reason why he is not in the frame.
