Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should focus on winning a trophy and being judged at the end of the season, according to club legend Roy Keane.

Solskjaer led United to their fifth Premier League home game without a win on Saturday, ending a week in which the club exited the Champions League with a 0-0 draw against Manchester City.

When asked by former City defender Micah Richards if Solskjaer could guide the club into the silverware, Keane told Sky Sports: ‘I hope so.

‘I would like to give Ole this full season and see in the summer. He had a setback for the week and a slight recovery today.

“I still think he needs to get a trophy. This obsession with being in the top four: United should be doing that [anyway].

United have lost to Crystal Palace and Arsenal and have been crushed 6-1 by Tottenham at Old Trafford this season, with a 1-0 win over West Brom, which is the second floor, their only league win at home.

They have failed to score in open play in four of those games and are back in the Europa League after failing to secure the point they needed in Leipzig on Tuesday to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Former United stalwart Gary Neville, who was also an expert on the monotonous derby showdown, urged: “I think Ole has to start dominating the games.

“When Manchester United have won games, it has been through the counterattack or in moments.

‘[The away wins at] Southampton and West Ham weren’t really 90+ minute gigs that got them down, they were brilliant moments.

“They have to dominate the big games in the next six to eight months and that will be the determining factor for Ole. Today was good, but that’s not a long-term tactic that will win you a title. ‘
