Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a strong message to his Juventus teammates after their 3-0 loss to Fiorentina, insisting that “there is no excuse for anything” as Andrea Pirlo’s team lost more ground in the race for the Serie A title.

La Vieja suffered their first home loss of the season when goals from Dusan Vlahovic, Martín Cáceres and an own goal from Alex Sandro defeated 10-man Juventus in a surprising result on Tuesday.

The loss, coupled with AC Milan’s 3-2 win over Lazio, puts Pirlo’s team within 10 points of Stefano Pioli’s team in their bid to win their 10th consecutive Scudetto.

And Ronaldo, the league’s top scorer with 12 goals, has urged his teammates to ‘give more of ourselves’ as the Old Lady seeks to close the gap with her rivals in 2021.

“Yesterday, with a poor performance and a result far from acceptable, we closed our games scheduled for 2020, a special year in many particular respects,” wrote Ronaldo on Instagram.

‘Empty stadiums, COVID protocols, postponed games, prolonged stoppages and a very tight schedule.

But this is no excuse at all. We know that we have to give more of ourselves to play better and win more consistently. We are Juventus! And we simply cannot accept anything less than excellence in the field!

‘I hope that this short stoppage will help us to come back stronger and more united than ever, because the season is still far from over and in the end we believe that, once again, we will celebrate with our tiffosi.

“Believe in us, trust our team as much as we trust you, and we will deliver!”

Ronaldo’s comments come after Pirlo tore his stars apart after Tuesday’s loss, as the club legend accused his team of “having their mind set on the holidays.”

“What happened with the red card cannot be used as an alibi,” he said, speaking to Sky Sport Italia. “The result was not due to the attitude of Fiorentina, but to the lack of ours.

‘When this is the case, you face bad situations like this. In games before Christmas it can happen that you have your mind set on the holidays. We were out of focus and couldn’t recover. ”
